Step-By-Step Process On How To Light A Furnace Pilot Light

A furnace could sometimes go off due to a cold breeze. It happens, depending upon how old it is and how much you’ve been using it. This is likely to happen in winter, however, turning it back up is easy. Your home will be warm and comfortable in no time once you learn this useful skill.

The pilot light works as an ignition for the furnace and an indicator to show that the furnace is burning and producing heat.

Let’s have a step-by-step look at how to light a furnace pilot:

Find the Instructions on your furnace

Almost all furnaces would have a set of instructions on how to light a furnace. Sometimes those instructions would be written small or would get blackened. This could make it difficult to read. Keeping those instructions nearby in a safe spot to locate at the time of need is advisable. Else you could always take a picture of those instructions on your phone.

Make sure the knob is turned OFF

The bottom of the furnace would have some settings like “Pilot,” which is either “On” or “Off.” Make sure it is “Off.”

Wait for 5 minutes after turning OFF the pilot light

The incoming gas flow would stop, and the remaining gas released from the pilot would dissipate slowly. So it is best to wait for 5 minutes, light the flame and turn on the pilot.

Turn ON the Pilot Light

Now turn on the knob to the Pilot switch, the gas flow would re-start. You can light the flame with a matchstick or lighter. When you depress the reset button, hold the burning flame near the pilot opening. Once the pilot begins to burn, release the reset button. The furnace would start working once again.

Observe the furnace

Now that you are almost done, the pilot light is on, and the furnace should start generating sufficient heat soon. Stay there for a short while and check that the pilot flame is still there. Look around and try to know what caused the pilot light to turn off so suddenly.

Please note that if you have followed the above steps a few times and the pilot light still won’t turn on, it is time to look at it. There is probably something wrong with your furnace. Contac us Furnace Repair in Carmel IN is the right choice in that case.

Also, use a tightly rolled piece of paper if you don’t have a long matchstick or lighter to keep some distance between you and the pilot light. Turning off the pilot light ensures that there is no excess gas that could cause damage or injury. Hence, never light it on directly.

If you follow the instructions mentioned above, your place will remain warm and well insulated. However, some issues are not easily solved. In that case, you’ll need to get a new system.
