June in Indiana doesn't forgive a neglected air conditioner. Fifteen minutes in May beats a sweaty Saturday in July — here's the checklist we run through ourselves.
Do it yourself — 15 minutes
- Swap in a fresh filter — a dirty one is the #1 cause of weak cooling
- Clear leaves, grass and mulch at least two feet from the outdoor unit
- Gently rinse the outdoor coil fins with a garden hose (power off first)
- Open every supply vent and make sure returns aren't blocked by furniture
- Test-run the AC on a mild day so surprises happen in May, not July

- Warm air from the vents, or the system running but never reaching setpoint
- Short cycling — kicking on and off every few minutes
- Ice on the refrigerant lines or outdoor unit
- New rattles, squeals, buzzing or musty smells
