Troubleshooting

AC blowingwarm air?

An AC that runs but won't cool has a handful of usual suspects — a couple you can rule out in minutes, and a few you shouldn't touch. Here's the difference.

Safe to check yourself — 10 minutes

  • Thermostat set to COOL and fan on AUTO, not ON
  • A fresh filter — a clogged filter can ice up the whole system
  • Is the outdoor unit actually running? Listen for the fan and compressor
  • The outdoor disconnect and breaker haven't tripped
  • Clear leaves, grass and debris away from the outdoor unit

Stop and call us if…

  • Ice on the copper lines or the outdoor unit — turn the system off and let it thaw
  • A hissing or bubbling sound near the unit or lines
  • The outdoor fan isn't spinning while the system runs
  • The breaker trips again after one reset
  • Air is cool-ish but never cold, day after day

Why it matters

What's usually
going on.

01

Refrigerant doesn't get 'used up'

If it's low, it leaked — and it needs a proper repair, not a refill. Topping off a leaking system is money straight into the air.

02

Ice means airflow, usually

A frozen coil is most often a dirty filter or a failing blower. Running it frozen can destroy the compressor — the single most expensive part — so shut it off and let it thaw.

03

Capacitors fail quietly

This cheap part starts your compressor and fan. When it dies, the outdoor unit hums or does nothing while warm air blows inside. Quick fix — but it's a live-voltage repair, so it's ours to make.
